Wear This, Not That

We commonly get asked by clients what they should wear to their portrait sessions.  Rather than telling you what to wear, we’ve come up with a few tips for what not to wear.  After all, you are unique and have your own style and flair, and we want that to shine through above anything else.  Here are a few things we’ve come up with over the years.

  • Avoid solid white shirts.
  • No thick stripes or logos/writing.
  • No sleeveless tops or tube tops. Too much skin exposure can distract from your photos.
  • Nothing too tight, anywhere. You want to be able to breathe and move around.
  • Have a good mix of a cute pair of jeans, something casual, and a dress. Don’t bring all dresses or formal wear. For guys, step it up a notch from t-shirts/sweatshirts to a well-pressed button-down paired with a nice pair of jeans.
  • We really love the layered look. For girls, a fitted jacket with a fun pattern underneath, bold or colorful jewelry, flattering jeans, and a cute pair of heels or peep-toes are fun. For guys, a cool pair of jeans, a collared shirt with a loose tie or sweater looks great.
  • For engagement or family sessions, please don’t match exactly, just be sure to dress in coordinating colors. Our rule is if you wouldn’t wear colors together in your own outfit, don’t wear them separately in each other’s outfits.
  • Don’t forget about the finishing touches (hair, makeup, accessories, shoes).
  • Last thing. Bring props from your everyday life because they can make your pictures even more unique. Ideas:  musical instrument, motorcycle, vintage bicycle, favorite coat or favorite chair.

Keep in mind that the location/backgrounds we use may help narrow your outfit selections. Or, of course, we could do it the other way around and let your outfits determine where we go!
